SANDMAN OVERTURE CELEBRATION
Saturday, November 14th, 2015 at Isotope in San Francisco

Celebrating the release of the biggest book of the decade, the SANDMAN OVERTURE DELUXE EDITION hardcover!
Illustrated by JH Williams III (SANDMAN OVERTURE, BATWOMAN, PROMETHEA, CHASE)

There are few people on planet Earth we love more than JH Williams III (if you like beautiful memories people share with their friends this will bring tears to your eyes) and together we’ve been quietly planning our event to celebrate the amazing SANDMAN OVERTURE for a long, long time. As Jim doesn’t make very many public appearances we know his visit is going to be *very* popular. The Isotope staff wants you all to have a wonderful experience meeting him and for everyone to get to create amazing memories of JH Williams III’s visit together. So we’re doing a duo of events as only the Isotope can to make sure everyone has a chance to meet one of the nicest and most talented people in all of comics! First up is a casual, daytime signing event for the under 21 crowd, and then an epic celebration later that evening for the folks who like our mix and mingle, bring-your-ID, after-dark events.

SANDMAN OVERTURE SIGNING w/ JH WILLIAMS III
2pm – 6pm, Saturday November 14th
This intimate all-ages autographing session is completely free of charge and open to all. We want to ensure you have a completely unique and personal experience with Jim so we’re specifically tailoring this event to let you have a real moment to sit down with him. Jim will sign your SANDMAN OVERTURE hardcovers, PROMETHEA omnibii, BATWOMAN paperbacks, vintage CHASE comics, BLONDIE and THE SWORD albums, and anything else he’s ever worked on. We don’t even mind if you’ve bought them elsewhere, this isn’t about us, it’s about you and Jim getting to say “hi.” As this is sure to be a popular signing and we definitely want everyone to get time to actually talk with Jim so we kindly ask that you bring no more than 5 items for him to sign. On behalf of every one of us, thanks in advance!

Tuesday October 02nd 2007, 7:17 pm

This last saturday was the opening party for a month long rotating gallery event featuring the original art for all 3 issues of the just published Batman arc that i did, as well as a little bit of other stuff. What a blast that was. Crazy hyper energy infused Comicbook party madness. It went on for a good 6 hours and I loved every minute of it. I want to say thanks to all of you who came out for it and made me feel really welcome. I had a really good time meeting up and talking with you guys. I want to thank James and kirsten for putting on this event. If any of you are in the area of the shop please stop by and check out the work while it’s there. And those of you who were already there to see it, visit again weekly because the gallery will rotate.

Haden Blackman for a BATWOMAN signing, celebration, and original art installation.  Meet the creators behind this gorgeous and critically acclaimed new series for a duo of once-in-a-lifetime events. Take an uncommon look at The New 52 Art Tour Portfolio, including six 11×17 sets of artwork (from script to inks to the final full-color production pages), including a three piece BATWOMAN collection. And on display for the entire month of December in the Isotope’s legendary original art gallery will be twenty pages of JH Williams III’s hand-drawn artwork for BATWOMAN issue #3. These pages will only be displayed together for the public this one time, and nowhere else on the planet.

All-Ages Autographing Session
3pm – 6pm

A signing session with the creative team behind BATWOMAN! Isotope’s personal, intimate signings provide a unique fan experience by eliminating the uncomfortableness of long lines and the awkward moments of meeting your favorite creators. While you wait for your signing reservation, hang out with fellow fans in the Isotope’s posh lounge and indulge your eyes in gorgeous BATWOMAN original artwork hanging in the gallery. For those who want to peek even further behind the wizard’s curtain at the process that goes into actually creating this comic, guests will also get a rare glimpse at Williams and Blackman’s original scriptwork.

In an effort to make this as personal of an experience for everybody (and also we’ve promised Jim and Haden we wouldn’t kill them!) we do ask that you bring no more than 5 items to get signed, please. But don’t forget your camera – the Isotope staff will be on hand to help ensure you get great documentation of your meeting!

Upcoming Appearance Events

Saturday September 24th 2011, 9:54 pm

Above is the slightly tweaked second print cover to Batwoman #1, due out in a couple weeks I believe. The tweaking was done by Mark Chirarello, altering the logo color, adding red behind Batwoman’s head, changing the steam wisps from green to white-grey.

I will be making a few store appearances for October, 2 of which are next Saturday on the 1st in Las Vegas. At Comic Oasis earlier in the day, and then Alternate Reality Comics in the afternoon, times and locations are listed in the schedule section for this site. Also Alternate Reality is hosting a small gallery of the art to Batwoman # 1 from now till the end of October. If you’re in the Vegas area or feel like getting away from home, come by either store, or both, and say “hi”, hang out and chat with us. In addition to the gallery showing of Batwoman #1 art, I will be bringing plenty of portfolios to sift through at each store, including preview pages of upcoming Batwoman issues.

The next appearance will be on October 8th at Comics Plus in Los Banos, please check for time and location in the schedule. I will have art with me there too, come and hang out for awhile. (No link to a website that I could find)

I won’t be making any other appearances until December, which will be at the Isotope in San Fransisco, this one will have some special stuff going on, details soon.

Powered by Blondie

Thursday June 02nd 2011, 6:13 pm

Some really cool news has broke about a dream come true for me. As some may know, and certainly close friends do, I’m a huge Blondie fan and always have been. Last year Wendy and I actually got the opportunity to meet the band, it was astounding for me, and that is an understatement. However, certain things developed which allowed me to stay in touch with Chris Stein from the band. It was mutually decided to work together. First discussion was doing cover art for them on their next project following the current release of Panic of Girls. I really didn’t want to post this info until the band brought it up publicly themselves, which they’ve now done. I’m excited beyond words to work with them. Haden Blackman and I also developed a video concept for one of the new songs late last year. They seemed to really like the concept, but don’t know if the video will get done because of budgets and such. Thats how it goes sometimes, but there is gratification just getting the chance to present them with ideas. Seeing a published confirmation from them about doing the cover work on the next thing is just damn cool, I’m over the moon.

I of course let friends know. Who wouldn’t, right? And my good friend, James Sime of San Francisco’s Isotope Comics Lounge, has truly humbled me by this very sweet article he has posted about the night we hung out with Blondie. He’s the most awesomest! He describes it by far better than I can, so here is the link…

DEBORAH LOVES YOU

Monday December 10th 2007, 8:06 pm

Debbie Harry Rules…..!!

James and Kirsten from the Isotope, Drew from Image, and myself all went to see Debbie play live at the Filmore in SF sunday night. It was the final night of her tour for the new album Necessary Evil and we got prime spots about only 5 feet from the front of the stage. What an amazing show. It was the first time I’ve gotten to see her play solo material live. What a treat. All of the new songs sound fantastic live and are loaded with the same vitality of the recorded versions. She was obviously happy to be playing a solid retrospective of her solo material and full of energy. No surprise, considering the energy of the new material from the album. In the middle of the set we were treated to 2 very unusual acoustic versions of Blondie classics. Just amazing. Seeing this show was a real concert highlight for me.

TEZUKAGOD…
Our trip to see the Osamu Tezuka exhibit last week at the Asian Art Museum in San Fransisco was brilliant. The exhibit was astounding. The amount of work that was produced by him was overwhelming. An absolute inspiration to see so many original pages from across his career. One thing that was a very nice surprise was that they didn’t let Astro Boy (Mighty Atom) out weigh his other, less famous, works to americans. There was a good representation of material that hasn’t had proper translation here in the states. Fortunately Vertical seems to be intent on changing that by bringing over more of the less mainstream oriented material, like they have done with Buddha. They are publishing several of his single novel length books over this next year. That makes me very happy. I’m not sure if Viz will have anything else come out other than the end of Phoenix. The pleasure of seeing so much original art from the master japanese comics was a genuine high for me and I probably will never have such an opportunity again. Since I had never seen original manga art before I was surprised by how small of a drawing size a lot of it was done. Which astounded me even more when seeing the precision of the tiniest details. If any of you haven’t read Tezuka’s works or are just familiar with Astro Boy I highly recommend that you pick up some his more ambitious works like Adolf, Buddha, or Phoenix.

OTHER PLEASURES AND TREASURES….
The Asian Art Museum offers quite a lot of beautiful art and historical artifacts from a multitude of cultures. I was very amazed at how big and extensive this museum is. There are giant tapestries dating back to times older than our nation itself, statuary and sculptures from all of Asia. Full japanese armor and plenty of other beautifully decorated objects of daily use from the histories of those varied lands and cultures. One of the most interesting things I noticed was even though all of this material was from asian origins there was a very distinct difference in styles, materials and palettes from one culture to another. Very fascinating and thought provoking.

We also went to Japan town. That was interesting as well with several shops purely dedicated to merchandise that was japanese specific. That area of the city was much smaller than I thought it would be. The next day we went to China town which is much much bigger than I thought it would be. An endless array of shops and interesting little restaurants where I bought a mah jong set. So I will be learning to play that soon.

LEONARD IS YOUR MAN…
just finished watching the film I’m Your Man. It’s about the songs of Leonard Cohen featuring performances by some very talented artists doing their renditions of his music. The film was intermixed with some insightful interviews with the artists sharing their feelings and influences from his songs along with interludes of Leonard himself sharing bits about his life. It’s a really good film and worth watching even if you are not familiar with his music (and if you’re not, shame on you). I’d say the only draw back to the performances given here is there are 3 that include Rufus Wainwright whose music and vocal style I can’t stand on a good day. So I really didn’t care for his renditions at all and couldn’t understand why there were 3 by him, overshadowing much better artists. Other than that you really should see this film if you haven’t already. His music and lyrical wit by far surpasses many of his peers. Truly one of the greatest song writers ever.

HIS INFERNAL MAJESTY…
Venus Doom, the new album by HIM is arriving this tuesday to a store near you. This is definitely one of best bands to come along in a very long while and the new material is amazing, as to be expected. My copies of the special and limited editions are already shipped and should arrive on my doorstep possibly the day before the official release date. CANNOT WAIT!!! I’m also purchasing my tickets to see them in SF in november at the Warfield.

A JESUS SURPRISE…
when looking for tickets for the HIM show I came across event ads for Jesus And Mary Chain to be playing 2 dates in october at the Filmore. These guys are one of the all time greatest and its awesome to see them back and working on a new album after many many years. I must go see them as well.
