VARIATIONS

Saturday June 21st 2008, 1:17 pm

Been awhile since my last blog entry, mainly due to having gone a trip to Vegas to surprise visit my grandfather, and because I’ve been recovering from a nasty sinus infection for a couple weeks after that. In the mix of that, trying to get work done. Let me tell you, trying to get energy enough to work while having a sinus infection is near impossible. If you’ve ever had one you know how painful they can be. So, since I barely could muster energy for work I certainly couldn’t think about blogging. However, I’ve gotten better and can resume my life.

I thought with the last issue of Crossing Midnight coming out soon that I would post more cover variations from the last 2 issues. On issue 18, I went through a variety color treatments and sent them all to the editor. We then picked our favorite. Unfortunately when the issue came out they decided to run a preview inside the issue for another series and needed to put a banner across the top of the cover. So they moved all of the art down cutting off the bottom of the art causing the composition to be a bit off. So here is the cover in it’s “naked” form along with the variations of logo treatments I did. Issue 19 here is just basically showing the cover in a few stages. There wasn’t any real tweaking involved with this one whence it was completed. enjoy….

Welcome back, J.H.! Sorry to hear about the Sinus Infection – I had one in the beginning of the year and it was a miserable experience so cheers to you for pulling through while working.

Amazing art too! Love the compositions!

Also, a beautiful snippet from your upcoming DC series has been making the rounds online and I must say it looks amazing! Can’t wait to read B——-!

ah ha! so you’ve caught that little leak on the work of the new project! yeah that wasn’t supposed to happen. otherwise i would be featuring that material myself here and more of it if was allowed to. announcements were to be made at the san diego show next month. but with the cat out of the bag, so to speak, i’m not sure what the company will do about it.
and thanks for the empathy about being down for the count. as for working under those conditions… not much happened for that 2 weeks other than reading over and talking about new scripts.

oh, and can you believe we got away with showing a decapitated head on a cover? that was tricky. it all had to do with style choice and lack of the blood being red. but i’m still amazed that we got away with it.

I can’t remember in what other specific context I came to the following realization about yr art recently – I may have been surfing thru yr flickr or something – but I really really like the way you draw skulls.
