I have to wait until friday to get to my (not so) local comic shop! Congrats on finally getting it out!

Terrific work JH! Love it. Absolutely love it. I can’t wait to see more of Kate.

BRAVO. This new Batwoman is outstanding. West Point grad, too.

You’ve inspired me to sculpt your costume design off the old DC action figure. I’ll post some pictures in a few weeks.

Thank you all.

Fantastic of course and I had great first day sales of this book despite there being ten thousand other titles released today. I think in some stores because of the title onslaught that Batwoman may get overlooked, but word of mouth is going to get around quick that this is not a book to be missed.

There’s also a FANTASTIC review of Batwoman over on Newsarama today and the comment thread is very pleased with the first issue and there’s even some funny homophobe comments (groan)!

Comment by Ralph Mathieu 06.24.09 @ 9:33 pm

Thanks, Ralph. And good news on the sales. I’ve come across lots of nice and positive reviews already.

What’s the tattoo on her arm represent?

Comment by Ryan Burton 06.26.09 @ 6:50 am

Great issue. Probably the single best comic I’ve read so far this year.

I was hesitant about Batwoman taking over Detective as I don’t really know anything about her (didn’t read most of 52), but this issue instantly captivated me. I can’t wait to learn more about her.

As good as the Rucka’s writing was on this issue, your artwork was amazing. Just incredible. It was so detailed and so expressive without being overwhelming or distracting. It improved the story instead of distracted from the story. A true accomplishment. Beautiful.

Thank you.

Comment by Joe Mac 06.26.09 @ 9:18 am

Hey there Ryan
The arm tat is military patch and the significance becomes more apparent in a future issue.

Thanks, Joe.

Thanks, JH. Never thought I’d pick up a Detective Comics issue, but your art sold me. Your panel layout is truly something–!

Dear JH,
I read ‘Tec 854 and I liked it a lot!
It carried some of the best art I’ve seen this year!
Normally I flip through a book before I buy it. Boy am I glad I didn’t this time. It would have spoiled the eye popping moments entirely! It seems you can draw anything thing the script asks and then some! I liked the different stylistic and colouring approaches a lot. The book totally delivered on all levels. The only thing I couldn’t place were the brownish squares on the spread on page 12-13 of Kates apartment. They looked nice but other than what’s their funtion?
Of course I’m looking forward to the next issue!!

Comment by Michel Nadorp 06.28.09 @ 6:51 am

Sorry for the typos, it should have been:
They looked nice but other than that what are their function?

Comment by Michel Nadorp 06.28.09 @ 7:05 am

Good question. Essentially I wanted it to seem as if we are seeing through the ceiling to her apartment from above. If you look at other shots from inside the apartment you can see those same tiles on the ceiling from below. The effect in that above shot was supposed give the impression of the ceiling disappearing before your eyes, moving into the scene. I guess that one didn’t quite work out as I’d like since you weren’t able to pick up on that
🙂

Tremendous! I don’t know how these pages are so stylistically engaging and yet do not remove the reader form the story. Generally when artists get cute or tricky, it is distracting and disengages me from the narrative. But this is quite the opposite. The result is not “why did the artist do that?” and is instead “holy $^!% look at what is happening now!” I enjoyed the whole thing- disappearing ceiling and all. Thank you very much for producing this work.

Thanks, Ben.

I feel kind of lame leaving a comment for the sole purpose of stroking your ego, but this was one damn fine comic book. I don’t buy superhero books normally. But between Greg Rucka’s writing and your art, I wanted to give this a shot. And I had to reread it last night, not for the writing (which is great), but just to take in everything you did with the book.

Okay, that’s enough. Awesome work. Can’t wait for the next issue.

Comment by Anjin 06.30.09 @ 5:56 pm

I no longer feel weird about being 41 years old and wandering into a comic book store for the first time in a long time. The writing and the art in this comic are a step above anything I have seen in years. I feel fortunate to have discovered your work and look
forward to a lot more!!

Comment by Ryan Z 07.01.09 @ 12:47 am

Hey there Anjin
Thanks for the very kinds words, very much appreciated.

Comment by jwh3 07.01.09 @ 1:18 am

Thanks, Ryan Z. Glad we were able to entice you and hope you enjoy the rest of the series just as much.

Comment by jwh3 07.01.09 @ 1:21 am

What are the chances that we can get some prints of the interior pages? Cuz I’m pretty sure I’d buy any of them in a heartbeat.

Comment by chris 07.02.09 @ 10:11 am

Hey there Chris
No prints can be done of interior pages because these are copyright of DC. The original art for these pages will go on sale very shortly.

Comment by jwh3 07.02.09 @ 4:01 pm

Yeah, that’s what I figured. Too bad.

Comment by chris 07.03.09 @ 3:03 pm

Hi JH, greetings from the UK. I really enjoyed your work on Tec#854. I’d never seen your stuff before but I’ll be sure to look out for it in the future.
