Frustrating and horrible…

Friday June 29th 2012, 12:36 pm

I heard from someone today about some very sad news, and sad circumstances that are involved. This was a story that I wasn’t aware of until now, but it raises important questions about our society and our industry. How creative contributors lives are affected and sometimes how they’re ended. This is about Robert Washington III. There isn’t a lot I can personally say about the man, as I’ve not had the opportunity to ever really speak with him. But he went down a path of hardship many of us could face one day, depending on circumstances put before us. As a comics creator he had done work at the beginning of DC/Milestone, the place that really helped me get my start as well, for a bigger picture of his story you’ll need to read at the links below. And its really important that you do so, please. But once you’ve done that, if you can, please donate to the Hero Initiative. This organization was created for the sole purpose of helping comics creators in need, much like Robert was in need.

J, I’m right there with you. I heard about his passing a week ago — not keeping up with the industry news like I used to — and I finally got a blogpost up on the subject myself last night. I’m so glad that The Hero Initiative, through the donations of literally hundreds of people, was able to give the man a proper funeral, yet so sad that it had to come to that.

Hey there Blam
Yeah, the whole thing has me unnerved today. As a comics creator, it certainly makes one ponder their own circumstances and future when confronted by such saddening events for a fellow creator. We seem to be living in a time when I feel the industry should be doing more to support the people who work in it. Its almost a feeling of negligence, and a judgement on all of us to see this. That we have to be in a place where a group like Hero Initiative is needed to exist is kind of damning. Very few of us actually get rich doing this, and I feel we need to find a better way to help us all thrive.
