New Website Project

Friday December 30th 2011, 10:26 pm

Note that in the above tab menu for this site, there is a new one titled 2306152. This new page on the site will feature a new daily blog writing experiment. Consisting of a single paragraph posted everyday, beginning January 1st 2012 and ending on December 31st. The page itself states that it will be be an experimental fiction blog, basically for lack of anything better to describe it. But its more like an abstract-docu-blog I guess. The goal is to note things in my daily life and examine them with whatever comes to mind. I’ve no idea where this thing will lead, but It might turn out to be something worth reading daily, or not. And hopefully a snippet of enjoyment for those who choose to follow along.

Bat Tat

Thursday December 29th 2011, 6:09 pm

Adnorning the office wall above my drawing table, among a few photos of Debbie Harry, is now this very cool framed Red Bat Tat (see below), made for me as a gift from our friend Pam Quevado. Such a cool idea. She’s been doing very beautiful pieces for a long while now. She runs an entertaining blog, and a webstore at Etsy too. I can’t speak enough about how much her work is liked around here. So everyone should go check it out, and her blog too. Links…

Another fun and totally awesome gift came from my wife, Wendy. A relatively portable record player for the office. For all you young’uns, music used to be to be played on these things called vinyl records (smirk), and still is in many circles. I’ve got a small decent vinyl collection that I haven’t played in quite some time, since cds and digital started becoming the main thing. But I gotta tell you, nothing beats the feeling of playing a vinyl record. I tried it out as soon as I got it set up in the studio office, and I can’t begin to describe the feeling I got from putting that record on, after not listening to a vinyl record in close to 10 years. It was amazing! It made me just stop, listen to the music and do nothing else but. The first record played was Pink Floyd’s The Final Cut, and then a Black Belles single. As noted on this blog, I’m a big fan of all kinds of music, but it always seems to be while working or doing something else. Its been forever since music has been played as a singular activity in this house, and I didn’t realize just how much I missed that, until now. So thats going to change for certain. What a perfect gift from my wife, bringing pleasure to my life.

Out This Week!

Chase- tpb cover
Finally, after nearly a decade of fans demanding this, we see in shops this Thursday, the complete Chase trade paperback collecting the entire series, plus some extras! The book is mostly illustrated by me, and all of the stories are co-written by D. Curtis Johnson and myself. Some of the short stories have other artists and those were done for various DC Secret Files projects, but I did art on a couple of those as well. We were fortunate to work with some talented folks on those short stories, artists that suited the types of stories being told. Over all its a nice book as far as trades go, it serves as a good archive of the material under one cover for the bookshelf. And its material I’ve been wanting to see collected together for quite some time. I’m proud of the work that we were doing then, looking at it again today, it still feels fresh enough, forward thinking enough, that I think others will find some pleasure in the stories being told. And it gives some looser insights to Cameron Chase and some of her motivations, the origins of her flawed humanistic character on display in the pages of Batwoman. Where she comes from, especially in her mode of thinking on people who put on masks and capes, is explored in this book. Also, you’ll see just how much Agent Cameron Chase has evolved since these stories, in my mind. That she has been heading down a darker road, her evolution as a character is profound. Her past and her flaws have lead her into a deep and paranoid world, where trust isn’t easy for her, you’ll see the roots of this here and also a story that shows a possible far future for the Department of Extra-normal Operations. And all of this has impact that will lead to some profound actions by Agent Chase in the pages of Batwoman, as partly evidenced in the recent issue #4.

And let us not forget…

Wednesday December 14th 2011, 2:22 am

The final volume of Absolute Promethea (vol. 3) will also be out this week. This Absolute project turned into a three year publishing plan, and I think plenty of Promethea fans will be happy with this final edition. We tried our best to get everything Promethea into these 3 Absolute editions. And for volume 3 we’ve got some cool extras and features, such as the Little Margie stories by Eric Shanower (whose written the introduction this time as well), other Promethea appearances from other America’s Best Comics titles, some art galleries (some of it production materials), an article written by me on some of the process images displayed. And finally, the infamous issue 32 poster version, done as a double sided folded insert that can be removed at your discretion, reproduced at much larger size than the previous trade editions. And in benefit of including the poster, we’ve reprinted the article on the process of creating it written by Todd Klein. Below is the gold color slipcase art for this edition…
